Sihanoukville: The government plans establish Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samleom islands as a new city, according to a sub-decree released by the government in January.

The government will officially designate the islands as Koh Rong City at the end of this month. The islands were classified as communes within Preah Sihanouk province’s Mittapheap district till now.

The two islands have a combined area of over 100 square kilometers. The islands have around 4,000 permanent residents.

The city will have two districts, Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samleom.

“The number of investments is still small after the announcement by the government, and the number of tourists is lower than last year,” said Vit Sopheak, a deputy police chief in Koh Rong.

Last year, the $40 million five-star hotel, Royal Sands Koh Rong, opened its first project phase that features 67 villas (71 units). The project is owned by Royal Group.

Prime Minister Hun Sen presided over the inauguration of the 5-star hotel located in Koh Rong’s Soknhey village.

The prime minister said that “Koh Rong and the other islands in Cambodia are state-owned and non-private islands. The government has granted limited development rights to private companies for investment in the tourism sector.”
